Save Norwalk’s Neighborhoods
Historically, a collection of villages and 375 year old streets, Norwalk lacks a traditional downtown. The city’s different neighborhoods and proximity to Long Island Sound is what makes it a desirable and unique city. In May, 2023 Independent Party members created a civically engaged, non-partisan and completely public Facebook page entitled Save Norwalk Neighborhoods. It was established as a grass roots, non-partisan rebuttal to City Hall, following their (little publicized) city wide zoning rewrite designed to increase density.
The Facebook Group was originally focused on challenging the arbitrary rezoning of: 1) various single family neighborhoods to 2-family, 2) increasing building heights in what has historically been a low rise city, and 3) the continued building in flood zones. Having successfully advocated for scaling back some of the up-zoning, the page has evolved to addressing long standing neighborhood quality of life and city management issues exacerbated by increased density. This currently includes, but is not limited to:
- Years of unenforced blight violations
- On street parking and impassable streets
Norwalk is Fairfield County’s second most densely populated municipality after Bridgeport. The Independent Party believes in city management policies that support neighborhood quality of life, city infrastructure, schools and city budgets.
